Basic Skin Care, …the What, How and Why of It

Updated: Dec 4, 2020

I have read and studied what many experts in the field of skincare had to say on the matter and done ample personal experimentation to understand the importance of a good skincare routine.

WHAT is “Skin Care”

It is the basic care and protection of our largest organ—our skin! Yep that’s right, the “skin” is the body’s largest organ. Besides holding all our internal organs in place, it plays an important role in protecting us from outside pathogens. You could say it, “It’s our body’s first defense system so maintaining it is as important as brushing our teeth, to keep them functioning properly and looking beautiful.

WHY Skin Care matters

Good skin care is important to help our skin stay in good condition. We shed skin cells throughout the day, so it's important to keep our skin in radiant good condition. An effective routine can help prevent acne, treat wrinkles, and help keep our skin looking its best for many years to come.

There are cosmetic and medical benefits to maintaining a good skin care regimen. We all know we can’t slow down the passage of time, but with a finely tuned skin-care regimen we can reduce it’s effects like the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and sun damage.

The goal of a skin-care routine is to promote and maintain a healthy radiant complexion so it functions at its best, allowing for early detection and treatment of any problem areas. We can manage and treat minor skin issues such as dryness or oiliness more effectively, as well as more severe conditions like dermatitis, eczema, rosacea, etc.

HOW to create a Skin Care routine

A good skin care routine includes these three basic steps: Cleanse, Treat, Moisturize. What you use and how you use it will depend on your age, skin condition or any special skin concerns.

Cleansing is the first step of any good skincare routine.

Treatment maybe needed at various times for certain conditions.

1. Wash with warm or tepid water using a gentle cleanser

2. Treat and protect with toner, serums or other facial remedies

3. Apply moisturizer, remember to include SPF protection

According to a recent Good Housekeeping online article by Katie Berohn titled ‘How to Find the Best Skincare Routine, According to a Dermatologist,’ “Beauty routines are an opportunity to notice changes within yourself,” says the San Francisco skin-care specialist Kristina Holey. As your skin needs shifts with age, so will your products. Still, she adds, “it’s not about creating perfection.” Allow these three steps to become your daily ritual that fortifies your skin and grounds your day.”

That covers the basics of skin care; the benefits and importance of establishing and maintaining a good skin care routine. I will continue to experiment explore and share knowledge, details, and recipes and products to assist you in establishing a routine that works for you. To do that, you must know and understand your specific skin type as well as any skin conditions that exist.
