How To Wash Your Face: Cleansers, Cleansing 1, 2, 3

We’ve covered the importance of the first step in a basic skincare routine: Cleansing.

Let’s review.

Why We Cleanse: to remove makeup, dirt, dead skin cells, or other pore clogging grime that can dull our radiance by allowing the skin to breathe, repair and renew itself. Starting with a “clean” palette helps other skin care products to penetrate our skin more deeply and perform their tasks more efficiently.

What kind of cleanser should you use? Like most issues concerning our hygiene, it is a highly “personal” choice but it should be a well informed choice. The most important things to consider when choosing a cleanser are your skin type and your skin goals.

There are many types of facial cleansers. Choose one that is best for your skin type and/or conditions.

1. Gel Cleansers best for Oily and combination skin

2. Cream Cleansers best for Dry and sensitive skin

3. Foam Cleansers best for Oily and combination skin

4. Oil Cleansers good for Most skin types

5. Clay Cleansers good for Oily and combination skin

6. Micellar Cleansers can be used for Dry and sensitive skin

7. Powder Cleansers can be used for Oily and sensitive skin

8. Bar Cleansers best for Oily and combination skin but some quality “handmade soaps” can be excellent for most skin types; often improve sensitive skin conditions

9. Cleansing Cloths, Mitts and Sponges recommended for Oily and combination skin

Commercially produced, mass-market soaps are made of petroleum-based lathering agents, synthetic fragrances, harsh dyes, and dangerous preservatives. Individuals with sensitive skin will feel and see a noticeable difference from using natural handmade soaps.

“Proper facial cleansing prevents acne breakouts, can improve skin health, and may even reduce skin inflammation,” Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City [source]

HOW TO CLEANSE YOUR FACE

1. Wet your face with lukewarm water using your fingertips to apply cleanser.

2. Massage cleanser into skin, use gentle circular motions --scrubbing can damage skin.

3. Rinse with cool water and pat dry with a soft towel.
